How to Change Your Air Filter in 3 Quick Steps

You should change the filter in your HVAC system at least once every three months to keep air clean and healthy in your Orange, Texas, home. Changing your filter is simple when you know how to locate, measure, and insert it properly.

Locate the Air Filter

Your HVAC filter is probably located on your unit where the return air duct meets the air handler. Depending on your unit, you may find the filter on the top, bottom, or side. If you don’t see a filter in the HVAC unit, check your air-return grilles. You may find it behind a vent in your home.

Check the Measurements and Choose a Replacement

Remove the existing air filter and check the measurements. These are usually printed along the edge of the filter. You should always choose a replacement with the exact same measurements as your previous filter. If you choose a filter that’s too large, it won’t fit in the unit. One that’s too small will leave a gap around the edges where dirt and dust can enter the system.

You should also check the MERV rating for your new air filter. The higher the MERV rating, the finer the filter mesh. Most standard filters have a MERV between 5 and 8. This will trap up to 70 percent of particles 3 microns or larger in size. A MERV rating between 9 and 12 can capture up to 90 percent of particles between 3 and 10 microns. Residential systems typically can’t handle a filter with a MERV rating above 12.

Insert a Clean Replacement

Slide your clean replacement filter into your system where the previous filter was. Check the filter for arrows that indicate the front and back. Stock up on clean filters so you’re ready for your quarterly swap.

In addition to regular filter changes, you should also schedule twice-yearly maintenance visits to keep your HVAC system in shape. If you’re overdue for your tuneup, call Thermacon Service Company, Inc. at 866-797-1535.
