How Tax Incentives Impact Your New Heating and Air

Posted on in Blogs

Have you been considering having a new heating and cooling unit installed? Home and business owners in Nederland TX sometimes put off replacing an inefficient unit due to concern about the cost. If you can relate, the Thermacon Service Company, Inc. has good news for you. In early January of 2013, President Barack Obama reinstated the 25C Tax Credit for installing high efficiency heating and cooling systems. These credits previously expired on December 31, 2011. The recent legislation extended the 25C Tax Credit to December 31, 2013 and is retroactive for all qualified installations in 2012.

Heating and Cooling Equipment Eligible for the Tax Credit

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has created five different categories of high efficiency equipment that are eligible for the tax credit. The 25C designation refers to the section of IRS code that explains the rules for this deduction. The amount of the credits range from $50 to $300. To claim the credit, you must have had one of the following pieces of equipment installed during the eligible years:

  • A $50 tax credit is available for the installation of an advanced main circulating fan. This is a fan that is used in furnaces powered by natural gas, propane or oil. The electricity consumption of the furnace fan can't equal more than two percent of its total energy output.<
  • A $150 credit is available on boilers and furnaces with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of 95 percent or better. The unit must operate on natural gas, propane or oil.
  • A $300 tax credit is available on water heaters that use an electric heat pump and have an energy factor that is 2.0 or above. Water heaters that are powered by propane, oil or natural gas with a thermal efficiency rating of 90 percent or better are also eligible.
  • A $300 tax credit is available for split system air conditioning units and heat pumps that meet energy efficiency standards. Air conditioners must have a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 16 and heat pumps must have a Heat Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) of 8.5. Packaged central air conditioners with a SEER of 14 and packaged heat pumps with a HSPF greater than 8.0 are also eligible.
